« Back to Glossary Index

An evolutionary process in which rapid speciation produces several distinct new species from one ancestral lineage, usually due to changes in the environments that facilitate new niches. A classic example of adaptive radiation is the diversification of finches across the Galapagos Islands, which was first recorded by Darwin.
