Exaptation

« Back to Glossary Index

A trait, feature, or structure of an organism or taxonomic group that takes on a function when none previously existed or that differs from its original function, which had been derived by evolution.

Bird feathers are the most recognizable example of exaptation, also known as a pre-adaptation. Feathers were present on flightless ancestors of birds and likely evolved for temperature regulation, but now serve practical purposes with flight and mating rituals.
