Cool! I’ve been wondering how to trap squirrels in urban habitats. Do you generally catch them in parks or do you trap in neighborhoods too (maybe in yards of consenting homeowners?)? And have you ever found them to be wary of the traps or bait?
Both! Folks are usually pretty happy to let us trap squirrels on their property, which is awesome. It doesn’t take our city squirrels long to investigate the traps, and they’ll usually come back for seconds or thirds. Rural squirrels are definitely more wary!
Love your illustrations, Chloe! Great tips too. I’ve just finished my data collection on urban grey squirrels in the UK, so I have complete empathy for ypu and the joys of urban squirrel wrangling. Whats the strangest thing a member of the public has asked you, or accused you of?
Thanks fellow squirrel-catcher 😀 We were once accused of being “drug addicts” and got chased out of a graveyard… fun times. That was actually the motivation for our team shirts!
