Urban heat island

A common consequence of urbanization is the increased temperature of urban areas relative to their outlying areas. This is partially due to the overuse of impervious surfaces, such as pavement and dark rooftops, which absorb and re-emit solar energy. Cities can combat this effect by increasing naturalized areas and green roofs, which instead reflect the sun’s energy and can have a cooling effect on city air.
