Urban Evolution at Behaviour 2019

The 56th annual conference of the Animal Behavior Society and the 36th International Ethological Conference will come together for Behaviour 2019 in Chicago, Illinois from July 23 – 27. There are several presentations that are bound to be of interest to the urban evolution community including a full symposium on animal behavior on an urbanized planet! We have highlighted a few talks that may be of interest below, but be sure to check out the full program here.

  • Black widows on an urban heat island: hormonal, developmental & behavioral shifts stemming from extreme heat (J. Johnson)
  • Urban carnivore behavior and the role of human culture (J. Young)
  • Nutrition in the city: effects of roadside pollutants on butterfly life history and behavior (M. Kobiela)
  • Behavior-mediated urban success from individuals to species (O. Lapiedra)
Friday:
  • Surface sterilization and city sickness: a case study with bird feeders and water baths (K. McGraw)
  • Novel Fear Dynamics in Urban Ecosystems (S. Magle)
  • Behavioural ecology of urban organisms: Moving beyond the low-hanging research fruits (M. McDonnell)

  • The schedule for posters has not yet been released – feel free to advertise your poster in the comments!

Are you attending Behaviour 2019? Did we miss any talks on urban evolution? If so, let us know in the comments so we can be sure to add it to our schedules! We will be live blogging the meeting, as usual, so check back starting July 23 to hear about the latest in urban evolution and behavior research. And if you are attending the meeting, consider blogging a talk or poster for us (new contributors welcome!). Just send Kristin an email and she will fill you in on all you need to know.
